The Commissioner of the State Police of Oaxaca, Francisco Santiago García, accompanied by personnel from the Secretariat of Government and the Peace Coordination, entered the municipality of San Dionisio Ocotepec, located in the Central Valleys region of Oaxaca, Mexico. The mission aims to lead negotiations with the community assembly and secure the release of a police officer who has been held since the early hours of the morning.
The detained officer, identified as Antonio Monterrubio, is currently being held in municipal holding cells following an armed clash between patrol unit 2371 and local community guards, known locally as topiles. Graphic images circulating on digital platforms showed the injured officer amidst growing tensions and threats of lynching by local residents, prompting government officials to prioritize open dialogue to guarantee his physical safety, provide urgent medical attention, and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
According to accounts from local residents of San Dionisio Ocotepec, the community guards responded during the early hours to a report concerning armed individuals spotted at the town's main intersection. Upon arrival, the guards encountered a group of masked men and requested identification, at which point the individuals stated they belonged to the state police force.
Because the individuals were heavily armed, community guards asked them to step out of their vehicle to be brought before municipal authorities. The situation escalated when the occupants allegedly resisted and one of them fired shots. Community guards managed to disarm and detain one officer, transferring him toward the Municipal Palace. As the transfer took place, residents stated that additional state police officers began shooting, causing villagers to leave their homes and respond to the aggression.
