A tragic road incident in Quảng Bình commune, Thanh Hóa province, resulted in the death of a 67-year-old motorcyclist after a massive dried tree collapsed onto the public roadway during an unsafe private felling operation.

A severe road safety incident occurred on the morning of September 9, 2026, along Provincial Road 511 (also known as Route 4A) in Hiền Tây village, Quảng Bình commune, located within the Thanh Hóa province of Vietnam. Between 8:20 AM and 8:25 AM local time, a large dried African mahogany tree (known locally as xà cừ) collapsed directly onto passing traffic, leading to the immediate fatality of a senior citizen on a motorcycle.

According to reports verified by local administrative leadership and emergency authorities, the tree was positioned in front of property number 295. The homeowner, identified in official records as Nguyễn Quang H., had commissioned a local worker, Nguyễn Quang Thọ (43 years old, resident of Hiền Tây village), to chop down the dead structure due to persistent safety concerns regarding its potential risk to the property and nearby power lines.

During the cutting process, proper safety protocols—including full road closures, standard signaling equipment, or traffic detours—were severely lacking. Dashcam footage retrieved from a vehicle travelling near the scene revealed that while one individual attempted to manually signal approaching motorists to pause, traffic flow was not fully halted. Consequently, several commuter vehicles continued traversing the hazardous section while the cutting was actively underway.

At the exact moment of the tree's collapse, Lê Đình Thành, a 67-year-old resident of Mậu Xương village in Quảng Bình commune, was travelling south-to-north on his motorcycle carrying license plate 36BB-036.xx. The heavy falling branches impacted Mr. Thành directly, causing him to lose control and crash violently onto the pavement, sustaining critical bodily injuries.

"Immediate emergency aid was administered by nearby residents who rushed the victim to the Quảng Lưu health center for urgent medical resuscitation; however, the elderly driver succumbed to severe internal trauma shortly after arrival."

Local law enforcement and forensic investigators were swiftly deployed to secure the perimeter and preserve technical evidence. The police of Quảng Bình commune have officially summoned Nguyễn Quang Thọ for questioning to clarify the precise operational factors that caused the collapse into an active thoroughfare.

The investigation is currently overseen by the Thanh Hóa Provincial Police Criminal Investigation Department in coordination with the Regional People's Procuracy. Authorities are examining potential criminal charges related to manslaughter caused by negligence (known in the national legal code as vô ý làm chết người). The incident highlights critical public concerns regarding informal roadside maintenance and the urgent necessity of strict safety regulations during high-risk physical labor near active transit networks.
