A man died after entering the enclosure of an endangered Amur tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, prompting an immediate emergency response and a police investigation.

A fatal security incident occurred at Yorkshire Wildlife Park after a man entered the main enclosure housing Amur tigers, resulting in a fatal attack before emergency services could intervene. Authorities confirmed that the man died at the scene, while the tiger involved was safely secured unharmed.

According to witness accounts and official reports, the individual—estimated to be in his late 20s or early 30s—intentionally accessed the two-acre habitat by climbing over a visitor barrier on an elevated walkway. Witnesses observed the man acting erratically prior to crossing into the restricted area, despite attempts by nearby visitors to intervene and stop him.

Once inside the enclosure, the man made contact with the animal, identified as a five-year-old male Amur tiger named Altai. Park staff immediately activated emergency protocols, evacuating visitors from the immediate vicinity and setting up visual screens around the area. Park rangers discharged warning shots using deterrent cartridges to encourage the animal to retreat. The tiger eventually moved back to its holding facility and was secured without injury.

Emergency response teams, including two land ambulances, a specialist doctor, and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, arrived promptly at the site. Despite the rapid deployment of medical personnel, the man succumbed to his injuries on site.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park houses two Amur tigers, an endangered subspecies with an estimated wild population of around 500 individuals. Altai arrived at the facility from Norway as part of the European Endangered Species Programme to support captive breeding efforts alongside a female tiger named Tschuna.

Police authorities have initiated a formal inquiry to establish the full timeline and circumstances of the entry. The facility was closed to the public for the remainder of the weekend to facilitate the investigation. Officials requested that members of the public refrain from sharing graphic footage recorded by visitors during the event.
