A suspect in the killing of a woman and a 12-year-old girl was killed by a crowd outside the municipal government building in Ostuacán, Chiapas, after a group of local police officers was overwhelmed by residents.
The events unfolded after a investigation initiated on Tuesday, October 20, when an adult woman and her young granddaughter were reported missing. A multidisciplinary search group, incorporating specialized units from state prosecutorial bodies alongside district authorities, initiated ground search operations across the northern region of the state.
Hours into the search efforts, authorities located the body of 47-year-old Míriam "N" on a rural plot of land she regularly visited. Forensic examinations performed by legal investigators determined that her cause of death was acute hemorrhage caused by a severe neck injury inflicted by a sharp instrument.
Search teams continued operations to locate the missing 12-year-old girl, whose body was ultimately recovered on Friday morning. Official forensic reports concluded that the minor suffered mechanical asphyxiation by strangulation, accompanied by severe craniocerebral trauma, defense injuries, and evidence of sexual assault.
Following the location of the victims, law enforcement officials detained two individuals in connection with the crime. State authorities initially stated that the capture was executed through targeted operations to ensure safety and prevent disruption in the area.
Prior to the crowd assembling, the Governor of Chiapas, Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar, issued a public statement through official channels asking the community of Ostuacán to allow judicial authorities to proceed with the legal process.
"I want to ask the people of Ostuacán gathered in the Central Park to have confidence that the law will be applied. Taking justice into our own hands does not restore peace," stated Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar.
Despite appeals from regional leaders and the presence of law enforcement personnel, a large gathering surrounded the official vehicle where a suspect was held. Overpowering the local officers on site, members of the crowd seized the suspect, resulting in his death in the municipal center before reinforced security forces could arrive.
The official investigation into both the primary murders and the subsequent events in the central square remains under the direction of the relevant legal authorities.
